Director, Regulatory Counseling & Compliance for Global Services Provider (NYC)

My client is seeking a skilled litigator/regulatory enforcement attorney who’s been thinking about a change from law firm practice---How about using your litigation & investigations skills in a corporate legal department setting but in a regulatory compliance and advisory role with an industry leader? If this sounds appealing, read more about this highly unusual role….

Overview of Role: My client, a professional services firm with 250,000 employees globally, seeks to hire a Director level attorney to advise on professional practice issues, securities law matters, regulatory, and legislative matters. This newly created role is housed within the Regulatory Group in the OGC and reports directly to the Deputy General Counsel; you will join a small and highly collegial team of six attorneys within this 70 member OGC. The Regulatory Group provides legal advice to the firm’s client-facing professionals, leadership, risk management, etc. So, the position affords great visibility across the company advising team leaders in a number of different business units and client industry sectors. You will not be litigating or conducting investigations anymore, but, rather, assisting in setting business strategy, driving the development of new business in the market, and providing technical advice across disciplines.  Limited domestic travel is required for presentation/employee training purposes.

Qualifications: 5-12 years of litigation and/or regulatory enforcement experience gained in an AmLaw 100 firm or high-end litigation boutique OR a combination of current in-house experience and prior law firm training. Expertise advising clients in the financial services industry regarding SEC enforcement, white collar, and fraud investigations is required (prior exposure to accounting fraud or auditor liability would be ideal).  You also should have experience providing strategic advice in connection with responses to regulator inquiries and drafting letters to regulators in support of client positions.

Other Skills/Intangibles: Intellectually curious, agile, a creative thinker and excited by complexities. Strong executive presentation skills; adept at managing multiple cases/matters/projects and/or teams of internal and external resources; and a proven record of success directing efforts in building consensus, delivering difficult messages, and assisting in developing policies and procedures designed to enhance quality and manage risk.

Our client provides one of the best and most comprehensive training programs we have seen for their new lawyers, and the Regulatory Group rarely hires. I have worked closely with this favorite corporate client for seven years and have successfully assisted in placing 10 attorneys in their OGC. Hours are predictable at 9am-6:30/7pm and weekend work is rare.  Compensation package is in-house market competitive.
