Associate Attorney

We are a small and growing law firm in New Canaan, Connecticut. We primarily handle criminal defense and serious injury cases. The principal of the firm has been practicing for twenty-eight years.
What does our Associate Attorney do?
Our associate attorney will supervise all phases of pre-suit and post-suit litigation, including diligent analysis of written discovery, ensuring both defense compliance and the compliance with the plaintiff’s continuing duty to disclose. Associate attorneys prepare for and conduct fact and expert witness depositions.   They prepare for criminal and civil trials.  They also research and prepare motions and legal memoranda.  They appear with clients in criminal and civil court and argue motions.
Our associate attorneys maintain continual contact with our clients in order to exceed expectations for attention to detail, sincere interest, compassion and advocacy.
What are some characteristics that an Associate Attorney should have?
Associate attorneys should feel a sincere, abiding compassion for the people whom we represent. Our attorneys are intensely motivated to advocate and should be expert narrators of our clients’ stories. Associate attorneys have a passion and hunger to learn, are thick-skinned, always open to constructive criticism, learn from mistakes and take personal responsibility. They also are true team players, motivating others in our firm, contributing to tasks no matter how small, and seeking the highest possible level of professionalism.
In addition:

·         You must be a positive person. If you see the glass as being half full, you are the type of person we are looking for. People who work for this firm believe that they have the rare ability and opportunity every day, to help our clients, improve the lives of others, and improve their own lives.
·         You must be competent and proficient in the use of Microsoft Office programs and Outlook, at a minimum. CLIO is a plus!

We expect you to give us 100% when you are at work. You owe it to yourself and to us to do the best job that you can. Some of our clients can be challenging, but that only means that as professionals we must meet that challenge. If you do not think that you are up to the challenge of dealing with people who are troubled by problems and issues and come to us for help, then this is not the job for you.

·         You need to be able to talk to people in a manner that is polite, educated, and puts them at ease. You need to be able to deal with people from all walks of life with respect at all times.

Sometimes, you will need to know how to figure things out on your own and be able to creatively solve problems. Additionally, if you are above making a pot of coffee or helping out in another area of the Firm, this is not the job for you. The owner makes coffee sometimes and cleans the pot sometimes.  We help each other regardless of the task or if we think the task is outside of our job description.
Our office is open Monday - Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. You are expected to be here during those hours, with the exception of 1 hour for lunch.
With regard to evenings and weekends, normally you have those off but if we have an emergency, or there is a new prospective client, or we’re preparing for a trial, we would expect you to help us out.
If you are hired, you will be part of a wonderful team of people who work hard to get the job done right the first time and take pride in the work that they do. You will be part of a team that is rewarded for their hard work.
With regard to compensation, it is negotiable based upon experience and is subject to review after 180 days. The starting salary range for an associate attorney will be dependent upon experience.
