The Bureau of Consular Affairs, Visa Services Directorate, Legal Office (CA/VO/L) at the U.S. Department of State, is now hiring attorneys with a minimum of two years of experience working with immigration laws related to eligibility for non-immigrant visa (NIV) and immigrant visa (IV) status and admissibility under the Immigration and Nationality Act. CA/VO/L provides legal advice to officials in the Department of State on a wide range of issues related to U.S. visas, in coordination with the Office of Legal Adviser.
The Office also represents the Visa Services Directorate and the Bureau of Consular Affairs in multiple interagency contexts. CA/VO/L is responsible for ensuring accurate and uniform application of immigration laws related to visas, including through advisory opinions provided to consular officers abroad. Attorney Advisers in CA/VO/L coordinate with the Office of Legal Adviser to support the Department of Justice in defending the Department of State in litigation arising out of, or otherwise related to, visas and visa policy. CA/VO/L also advises on visa-related legislation, regulations, and agency guidance, including developing proposals, reviewing external proposals, and preparing and publishing implementing guidance for new legislation and regulations.
The work is fast-paced and exciting and requires mastery of the Immigration and Nationality Act provisions related to visas, excellent writing and oral communication skills, and the ability to work well with others. Applicants must be able to obtain a Top Secret security clearance, provide proof of active membership in good standing in the bar of a state, the District of Columbia, a U.S. territory, or the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, and must be able to provide a law school transcript prior to hiring.
The positions are at the GS-13 and GS-14 grade level (salary range: $102,663 - 157,709) commensurate with experience. The successful applicant will be a self-starter and able to handle a wide variety of assignments with short, time-critical deadlines.
 * Experience in immigration laws related to eligibility for non-immigrant visa (NIV) and immigrant visa (IV) status and admissibility under the Immigration and Nationality Act and ability to work independently is key.
