The Deputy Chief of the Queens District Attorney’s Domestic Violence (DV) Bureau manages and supervises misdemeanor and felony assistant district attorneys and support staff conducting investigations and felony prosecutions of domestic violence. The Deputy Chief shares with the Bureau Chief day-to-day operational responsibilities for the Domestic Violence Bureau. More specifically, the Deputy Chief’s responsibilities include:
Supervising and managing DV attorneys and support staff
Training DV attorneys in best practices and helping to enhance job performance including investigatory, trial advocacy and litigation skills and the application of the highest ethical standards
Managing new case assignments and assisting with the allocation of DV personnel resources
If the DV Chief is unavailable, formulating and approving negotiated pleas, reviewing and authorizing grand jury presentments and reviewing voted indictments prior to filing
Maintaining a curated case load of active prosecutions
Generating quarterly calendars for the Special Victims/Domestic Violence riding program and supervising riders
Overseeing the Domestic Violence Strategic Threat Alert Team, which enhances the prosecution of pre-arrest cases
Interacting with the Queens Family Justice Center partner agencies to address targeted high risk domestic violence cases
Interfacing with other agencies including NYPD, the Mayor’s Office to End Domestic and Gender Based Violence, Safe Horizon, and the Department of Probation
Conferencing cases as needed with defense counsel and courts
Qualifications: An interested applicant must possess a J.D. degree, be an active member of the New York State bar in good standing and have at least 10 years post-J.D. experience. The ideal applicant also has:
Extensive experience working with victims of domestic violence
Substantial felony jury trial experience with cases involving domestic violence
Prior experience interacting with agencies involved in Domestic Violence cases including the NYPD Domestic Violence Unit, the Mayor’s Office to End Domestic and Gender Based Violence, and Safe Horizon
Significant experience prosecuting domestic violence cases using evidence based techniques
Thorough understanding of the doctrine of forfeiture by wrongdoing and its application to domestic violence cases
Prior management or teaching experience
Excellent communication skills
