Exclusive search for an international real estate development company based in Washington, D.C.
This newly created position will advise senior and executive management on a broad range of real estate and corporate legal matters. Our client seeks an accomplished real estate lawyer (7+ years’ experience) to serve as one of two lawyers (reporting to the GC) handling leasing, development, and finance matters for all commercial real estate projects.
Overview of Company/Role: Our client’s primary business provides state-of-the-art data center campuses under ownership in the U.S. and internationally. It also has two affiliate companies: a residential multifamily development firm and a renewable energy development company. You would take the lead in drafting and negotiating purchase and sale agreements, data center leases and licenses with customers, services agreements and other operations-related agreements, and development-related agreements (e.g., construction, engineering & architectural), and you would oversee and manage the negotiation of loan documents for construction and permanent financings. You would also oversee the preparation of condominium instruments, REAs, and CC&Rs. Finally, you would gain other substantive skills by supporting the General Counsel on insurance and risk management issues, and corporate operating agreements, articles and bylaws, resolutions, and other corporate documents.
Requirements: Knowledgeable about every facet of ground-up development and a strong business orientation. Strong, sophisticated leasing experience is critical (data center leasing experience is ideal, with retail big box and anchor leasing a plus), with secondary expertise in real estate finance matters. Other essential skills include: intellectual curiosity; highly-skilled negotiator; excellent writing skills; strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail; solid communication skills with the ability to influence credibly and effectively at all levels of the organization; and the desire to manage and “own” deals.
Selling Points: This position will allow you to deepen your core expertise in real estate, while working hand-in-glove with key business clients. You also will gain expertise in broader corporate matters, leading to enhanced, long-term marketability. Finally, this segment of the real estate industry has been doing exceptionally well this year, resulting in the need for this hire and job security in these uncertain times.
